People still think rec 709 / sRGB is what everyone has without realizing majority of content gets consumed on phones with HDR capable, wide gamut displays.Just my own theories why majority of outputs end up in rec 709 / sRGB.If you find yourself in the situation where you just can't get the right color, then try a conversion LUT and see if that helps For example, clips from my R5 in Canon's Cinema Gamut generally seem ok if I set the project color space to rec 709 without conversion LUTs. You will have to do some tests to see end results based on your camera.When you have a wide gamut capable screen, you can export the rec 2020 file to the appropriate color space I would record in rec 2020 and convert to 709.The images tend to go extremely over / under saturated depending on screen and operating system I can't understand the first part of your question but generally rec 2020 content will not look great on a rec 709 screen.If this is not possible than I don’t mind creating two output files, one in hdr and one in sdr (again question 3 here for the sdr output file) My end goal is to achieve the best quality image that I can watch on all monitors, My questions are the following because it’s driving me mad not finding any clear advice about this online, either the info isn’t out there or I’m just a complete noob.ġ) If the video is stored in rec2020 hdr, will the colour space be backwards compatible with non hdr screens? Or put more clearly wil the content just fall back to 709 or will it look worse than if it was output in 709?Ģ) If so should I avoid recording in 2020 all together or can I record in 2020 and convert it to 709 at the end?ģ) If so do I simply select 709 as my output format in lumafusion or do I also need to apply a special LUT to convert the 2020 colour space to the 709 colour space?Ĥ) I see most people use LUTs for 709, why is this? Does no one bother with hdr or does everyone use slog with 709 to achieve the wider dynamic range or is there another way? Sometimes I’ll watch it on the iPad or MacBook which do support hdr.

I usually watch the videos on an old plasma TV (no hdr) or an hd protector. The best image quality comes from my iPhone, if I record in 709 on the iPhone it looks rather dull in comparison to rec2020. When editing home videos I often mix from these three sources. I also own a gopro hero 8 which records in rec709 and sony rx100m3 which also records in 709. I own an iPhone 13 capable of recording in rec2020 and up to 12bit HDR.
